About the project The British Library is leading the UK’s contribution to a pan-European commemoration of World War One, Europeana 1914-1918. The project, which has made hundreds of thousands of newly digitised material relating to stories and events of the war available online for free, received funding from the European Union’s ICT Policy Support Programme as part of the Competitiveness and Innovation Framework. 10,000 items from the British Library’s World War One collections are accessible via Europeana 1914-1918, along with documents, films, and family mementos relating to the war from partner institutions across Europe.

The British Library’s World War One website offers curated access to nearly 500 of these items, for schools and lifelong learners. Collection items are complemented by newly commissioned articles from leading experts, short films and interviews with academics and authors, and a dedicated teachers’ area. The website provides a starting point for delving into the hundreds of thousands of items available through Europeana 1914-1918.

This project has been funded by JISC and project partners to conduct mass digitization of primary sources relating to World War One from the Libraries, Special Collections and Archives of Wales. Material in this digital archive has been contributed by partners in Higher Education institutions, local archives and records offices. Community generated content was also collected at workshops run by the People's Collection Wales.

The project was launched in October 2013 and will be sustained by The National Library of Wales as a permanent and growing archive of the sources relating to the First World War as it affected Wales. Access to the material is free of charge for research and education.

PRONI - Public Record Office of Northern Ireland

PRONI - Public Record Office of Northern Ireland

The Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) is the official archive for Northern Ireland.

The Public Record Office of Northern Ireland is distinguished from other archival institutions in the United Kingdom by its unique combination of private and official records. The Record Office is not the Northern Ireland equivalent or imitation of any Great Britain or Republic of Ireland archival institution. It combines the functions and responsibilities of a range of institutions: it is at the same time Public Record Office, manuscripts department of a national library, county record office for the six counties of Northern Ireland, and holder of a large range of private records. This range of remit, embracing, among others, central and local government, the churches and the private sector, is unique to Northern Ireland.

You can use archives to research family history and local history. You can start your research at home as many archives are online, including the 1901 and 1911 censuses, General Register Office records and the Public Record Office files.

The National Archives

The National Archives

We are a non-ministerial department, and the official archive and publisher for the UK Government, and for England and Wales. We are the guardians of over 1,000 years of iconic national documents. We are expert advisers in information and records management and are a cultural, academic and heritage institution. We fulfil a leadership role for the archive sector and work to secure the future of physical and digital records.

We collect and secure the future of the government record, from Shakespeare’s will to tweets from Downing Street, to preserve it for generations to come.

Lives of the First World War

Lives of the First World War

IWM is a family of five museums and historic sites covering war and conflict from the First World War to the present day.  Our sites and unique collection of objects tell the human stories of lives engulfed in war and show how conflict has shaped the world in which we all live.

Our museum sites include IWM London, IWM North in Manchester and IWM Duxford in Cambridgeshire.  In addition we offer two historic experiences in London: Churchill War Rooms in Whitehall and the Royal Navy ship HMS Belfast which is permanently moored on the Thames.

IWM was founded in the midst of the First World War with a mission to preserve and tell the stories of all kinds of people, not only from Britain but from the countries of its empire.  And we continue to do this work right up to present day conflict, covering 100 years of experience throughout the Commonwealth.

As well as our permanent displays, we have a dynamic programme of temporary exhibitions, events and educational activities to help our visitors to get close to the lives of those affected by war and to develop a deeper understanding of its effect on the world.
